TWO new school proposals are out for public consultation in Bridgend county borough this month, for two sites in the village of Cornelly.
The proposals could see the construction of two new schools in the area, one being an English-medium primary school in Marlas, as well as a Welsh-medium primary school to replace Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger.
The pre-planning application consultation for both sites is underway by developers The Urbanists, before it can go ahead with submitting a full planning application to the local authority in the coming months.
If approved by council bosses, it could see the development of a new English-medium school in Marlas, based on land east of Heol Y Parc.
The proposals say once the site is completed, it would consist of 420 primary places, 60 nursery places and 15 additional learning needs places for ages three to 11, with the requirement of 45 teaching staff and and 32 ancillary staff.
The report read: “The new primary school will consist of two nursery classrooms, two reception classrooms, four infant classrooms and eight junior classrooms.
“Direct access into the younger years classrooms require these class spaces to be located on the ground floor. External play areas will also be located directly adjacent to classroom spaces.”
Additionally proposals for a Welsh-medium primary school will also be submitted by developers forn land at the site of the existing Corneli Primary School and Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sger in Cornelly.
Here there will be a reported 420 primary places and 60 nursery places for ages three to 11, along with a total of 45 teaching staff and 29 ancillary staff.
The report read: “The proposed site for the Welsh-medium school – Cornelly site, currently comprises three buildings; the existing Cornelly Primary School, Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sgêr and the children’s centre.
“Whilst the two school buildings will be demolished as part of this project, the children’s centre is to remain and continue its operation throughout the project.
“The new primary school will consist of two nursery classrooms, two reception classrooms, four infant classrooms and eight junior classrooms.
“Direct access into the younger years classrooms require these class spaces to be located on the ground floor. External play areas will also be located directly adjacent to classroom spaces. The juniors on the upper floor require a separate entrance.”
Public consultations for the plans will closed on November 10, and a full application will be submitted to the local planning authority for a decision.
