Widow of late councillor among candidates named ahead of Cardiff by-election

THE WIDOW of a much-loved Cardiff councillor who died suddenly this year is among the candidates standing to fill his seat.

Cardiff Council has set Thursday, April 25, as the date for the Grangetown by-election.

Tributes poured in for former ward member, Cllr Abdul Sattar, after his death was announced in February.

The widow of the late Labour councillor, Waheeda Abdul Sattar, will be following in her husband’s footsteps and running as a candidate for the same party.

There are seven candidates running in total after Cardiff Council closed nominations on Wednesday, March 27.

The candidates and parties they are running for are as follows:

  • Ahmed Abdillahi Abdi Samater  – Independent
  • James Robin Bear – Welsh Liberal Democrats
  • Andrew Charles Hovord – Independent
  • Kirstie Kopetzki – Plaid Cymru, Green Party, Common Ground
  • Sash Patel – Propel
  • Waheeda Abdul Sattar – Welsh Labour
  • Zak Weaver – Welsh Conservatives

Warm words were shared about Cllr Sattar from across the council chamber at a full council meeting on Thursday, March 7.

Another Grangetown member, Cllr Sara Robinson, said the passing of her ward colleague will leave a “huge hole in Grangetown that will be difficult to fill”.

Leader of the council, Cllr Huw Thomas, described him as a kind and jovial figure who was “loved throughout the Labour group”.

Cllr John Lancaster of the Conservatives group said it was a “terrible shock” to hear of Cllr Sattar’s passing and Cllr Rodney Berman of the Liberal Democrats said he was always greeted warmly by Cllr Sattar.

At the meeting Cllr Berman extended his condolences to the late Cllr Sattar’s family.

Cllr Andrea Gibson of the Plaid Cymru/Common Ground group said she will always remember Cllr Sattar’s “warm and friendly nature”.

There are four seats in total in the Grangetown ward.

The three others are all held by Labour councillors – Cllr Lynda Thorne, Cllr Ash Lister, and Cllr Sara Robinson.
