WORK has started on a new housing development on the site of a former working men’s club in Neath.
The project which is now under way will see the demolition of the former Neath Working Men’s Social Club on Wind Street to make way for the construction of 36 new homes.
The properties will all be built to meet growing social housing needs within the borough, and will be comprised of 32 one-bedroom apartments and four two bedroom apartments, with cycle storage, refuse storage and communal amenity areas.
The project which is being run as a collaboration between Swansea-based developer Castell Group, the Pobl Group and Neath Port Talbot Council will see the creation of the housing site adjacent to the new multi-million-pound leisure centre and library.
It has been supported by the Social Housing Grant funding from the Welsh Government, and aims to meet the demand for high-quality, affordable housing in the area while contributing to the regeneration of the town centre as well.
Situated in the heart of Neath Town Centre, The former Neath Working Men’s Social Club, was closed suddenly in 2021 having been opened since the 1960s, where it was well known for its darts and pool teams.
The new four-storey residential development which will take its place is expected to take just over two years to complete, with the site transformed into” high-quality, affordable, and low-carbon housing for the area.”
