Port Talbot Panthers mixed ability rugby team need help achieving a dream

Local people are trying to raise funds for a mixed ability rugby team from Port Talbot and the surrounding areas.

Port Talbot Panthers, who have been set up and playing rugby for about 5 years together as a team, are a mixed ability team of all ages who are in need of financial support.

We caught up with Sarah Fincham, one of the proud patrons of the Panthers who was eager to tell us more about the team and how you can help them aim for the stars.

“The Panthers consist of at least 30 lads, with various impairments, ranging from , visual, Down Syndrome, mental heath, Autism, ADHD, limb loss, Cerebral Palsy, and loss of limbs through rugby injury, to name a few.

“They are like one big happy family when they meet up on a Sunday for a game.

“All with their own character and enthusiasm for the game and fantastic support for each other, the team has changed their lives emotionally and mentally, having a place to meet up and interact twice a week, all bound together by a shared passion for the sport and an unwavering determination to excel despite the challenges they face.

“They train and play regularly against other mixed ability teams and have currently played their way up to second in their league.

“Other players, members involved have gained coach and referee badges, first aid , and some have moved on to represent MARIS (MA baa baas team).

Sarah was eager to tell us how local people and companies can help the Panthers:

“The team have been given the opportunity to play at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on 22nd March 2024, a total of 26 boys have been chosen to play, along with 9 back room staff.

“This is why we are turning to compassionate individuals and organisations for support. Your contribution can make a tangible difference in the lives of our players and help us continue our mission of promoting inclusivity and unity through the power of rugby, funds raised will help to cover new kit costs and travel expenses to get them to the stadium, even just a few pounds to get them on the bus, with new socks will help.

“By supporting our mixed ability rugby team, you are not only investing in the development of individual athletes but also promoting the values of inclusivity, diversity, and unity within our community.

“As you may know, sport not only provides invaluable physical activity and competition but also serves as a powerful platform for empowerment, inclusion, and community building. However, to continue pursuing our dreams and representing our community on the field, Port Talbot panthers rely on the generous support of individuals and organizations like yourselves

“Together, we can make a positive difference in the lives of our players and inspire others to embrace the principles of inclusivity and acceptance. any donation will be gratefully received.
