Two people have been arrested following the circulation of a disturbing video on social media which shows a schoolboy being assaulted in Newport.
The footage, widely shared on Wednesday evening, appears to show a pupil from Lliswerry High School being physically attacked by a group of children while being held by an adult male.
Gwent Police confirmed they were made aware of the video shortly after it surfaced online. The force has since arrested two individuals in connection with the incident, who remain in custody. Officers have also confirmed that the child seen in the footage has been identified and is now receiving appropriate support.
Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend said: “Those arrested are currently in custody and the person identified in the video is receiving support.”
In a statement, Lliswerry High School acknowledged it was aware of the “serious incident” and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be undertaken in collaboration with both Gwent Police and Newport City Council.
Meanwhile, the police also revealed they are investigating a separate report of an assault involving another child earlier that same day. Details surrounding that case remain limited at this stage.
A spokesperson for the force added: “We understand the worry and concern that incidents of this nature can cause, and would like to thank the community for the information they’ve given us up to now.”
The investigation remains ongoing, with officers urging anyone with further information to come forward.
