THE ELECTION of Jane Mudd as Gwent’s new police and crime commissioner means there will also be a change at the top of Newport City Council.

Cllr Mudd currently leads the local authority, but last November she told colleagues in the council chamber that she would step down as leader if she won the PCC election.

Following her victory on Friday, she confirmed to the Local Democracy Reporting Service that she would be going through with that plan.

Cllr Mudd will continue to serve as the leader of Newport Council until the local authority’s annual general meeting, scheduled for May 21.

At that meeting, she is expected to formally step down before the council confirms her successor.

Members of the city’s Labour group will, in the meantime, choose a new leader via an internal and private selection process.

Labour members of the council will then nominate that person at the May 21 meeting to be the new council leader.

Cllr Mudd became leader of Newport City Council in 2019.
