A FIRE-damaged office building in Allt-yr-yn is to be demolished to make way for apartments.
On December 31 2017, a fire broke-out at 9 Gold Tops, leaving the roof in disrepair. Now, the building will be replaced with ten apartments.
Planning permission was granted by Newport City Council’s planning committee at a meeting on Wednesday, April 5.
Nine two-bedroom flats and one three-bedroom flat are included in the plans.
At the meeting, Labour councillor Trevor Watkins, who represents Tredegar Park and Marshfield, questioned the lack of Section 106 contribution.
Planning officers said it would not be viable for the applicant to provide social housing as part of the scheme.
The site already had permission for nine self-contained apartments, which was granted in April 2016.
The newly granted application had an additional flat and a different design, which is in keeping with the character of the area and will “positively contribute towards the street scene”.
The plans include 15 off-street parking spaces and 20 cycle spaces located in the basement of the building.
The highways officer recommended 23 off-street parking spaces in-line with the council’s standards. But, the “sustainability” – meaning it is close to public transport and shops – of the site has been used to justify the shortfall.
