Fatal collision between a bus and car hospitalises five

Fatalities have been reported as a result of a severe collision between a car and a bus, according to the ambulance service.

Elwyn Street in Coedely, Rhondda Cynon Taf, is expected to remain closed until Tuesday morning following the incident, which occurred around 19:00 GMT on Monday.

The Welsh Ambulance Service dispatched seven ambulances and three doctors to the scene. While a spokesman confirmed the presence of fatalities, further details were unavailable at this time.

The spokesman also mentioned that the crash involved a bus and a car, with a potential involvement of a motorbike, but South Wales Police would later confirm that no proof was found of the motorbike.

Local councilor Danny Grehan, representing the Coedely area, described the collision as a devastating blow for the community.

“From what I understand, local people were involved in the horrific accident, and this is going to hit the area very hard.

“Obviously from seeing people’s comments last night, a shockwave will go through the whole community.

“The pain is obviously going to be felt by the families of those who are part of this but also in the whole community and I would like to thank the Coedely community for opening the community centre last night for the emergency services that worked there.”

South Wales Police announced an indefinite road closure, advising motorists to seek alternative routes. Additionally, congestion was observed on the A4119, a route connecting to the M4 at Miskin, as highlighted by the authorities.

Stagecoach Wales confirmed their inability to serve Coedely due to the ongoing road closure.

“We will serve Tonyrefail and will be using the bypass to Royal Glamorgan. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Alex Davies-Jones, the Labour MP representing Pontypridd, described the event as “heartbreaking news from our community.”

She expressed gratitude towards individuals who offered assistance on Monday night on the platform X, previously recognised as Twitter, and conveyed her heartfelt sympathy, stating,  “All my thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this.”

South Wales Police anticipate the road closure to persist this morning as authorities conduct an investigation into the collision.

Individuals possessing dash cam footage or who witnessed the incident are urged to reach out to the police by dialing 101 and quoting reference number 2300420639.
