AN OLD police station in a Rhondda town centre could be turned into offices.

A planning application has been submitted for the change of use of the former Tonypandy police station in Dunraven Street into 14 offices with mixed uses.

In the green infrastructure statement submitted with the application, it says that the building was built in 1876 and the building has not been an active police station for some time and that its condition reflects this.

It says the proposal will involve the change of use only of the building and existing boundaries will be unaffected.

It also includes two biodiversity enhancements including site lighting and dark corridors to minimise light pollution and reduce any impact on nocturnal animals such as bat and moths and also the provision of bird boxes.

It says the the property occupies a prominent position on Dunraven Street in Tonypandy town centre and internally  the building has a mixture of offices, a mess room, kitchens and other areas as expected within a police station which are over two floors.

The statement adds that the immediate area is made up of a mixture of retail and commercial premises which includes notable national retailer occupiers.

There is a courtyard area to the front and to the rear of the site are gardens of residential properties in Eleanor Street to the south-west.

To the north-west there is an adjacent commercial property and to the south-east is a church.

The green infrastructure statement says that the development avoids any significant damage to biodiversity, it provides an ecological enhancement proportionate to the scale of the development, the proposed ecological enhancement will be low maintenance and that the proposed enhancement is a net benefit to biodiversity as a result of the development.
