A VALLEYS community council has completed its move to a bigger premises.

Gilfach Goch Community Council has invited the community to join council members and staff to celebrate the opening on Monday, May 26, from 11am-2pm.

The new headquarters are based at the Cambrian Avenue Community Centre, what was known as “The White Hut”, in Cambrian Avenue, Gilfach Goch.

The open day will include hot dogs and burgers, ice cream, bouncy castles, candy floss, popcorn, face painting, and entertainment from Rhondda Radio, with everything free for the children of the village.

The premises were acquired from Rhondda Cynon Taf council under a community asset transfer scheme, which allows groups to take over assets such as empty buildings no longer needed by the county council at no or low cost.

As well as being a place of administration and a council meeting venue, the plan is to make it available for community use. It will also continue to be used as a polling station for elections.

Gilfach Goch Community Council is considering options for the old premises at Etna Terrace and council chair Andrew Draper said: “These include demolition and creation of a community garden.

“Upgrading the old office to modern standards and expectations was prohibitively expensive.”

Clerk to the council, Dawn Walters, said: “The renovated White Hut offers premises that are fit for purpose, value for council taxpayers and will be a real community asset.”
