New attractions and infrastructure upgrades boost local economy and visitor experience
CARMARTHENSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL is celebrating Wales Tourism Week (May 12–18) by highlighting the county’s continued growth as a destination, fuelled by significant investment, new attractions, and a thriving visitor economy.
Tourism remains a cornerstone of Carmarthenshire’s economy. In 2023 alone, the county welcomed 3.31 million visitors, generating an economic impact of £683.26 million. The sector supports jobs, drives business growth, and strengthens cultural identity in communities across the region.
Recent developments include the opening of a 12-hole crazy golf course at Caban Pendine – a fun, family-friendly addition to Pendine Sands. Another major milestone is the launch of the first completed stretch of the Tywi Valley Path. The 4-mile section, now open between Abergwili and Nantgaredig, is accessible to walkers, cyclists, and wheelchair users. Once completed, the full 16.7-mile route will provide a scenic, traffic-free corridor through the Tywi Valley to Ffairfach.
The council has also delivered key infrastructure improvements supported by the Welsh Government’s Brilliant Basics fund. These include enhanced access at Carmarthen Museum and Llansteffan, alongside upgrades at Pembrey Country Park and the WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre – all designed to improve visitor experience and sustainability.
To mark Wales Tourism Week, the council has launched a new gold-level filming module in its free Tourism Ambassador Scheme. This initiative promotes Carmarthenshire’s growing profile as a film and TV location. The module includes the ‘Set-Jetters Guide’ to help businesses and residents capitalise on screen tourism, in support of VisitBritain’s Starring Great Britain campaign.
Cllr Hazel Evans, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said:
“Tourism in Carmarthenshire supports jobs, drives investment, and helps preserve the unique places that make our county special. From new visitor attractions to community-led projects, we’re proud to showcase the very best of what we offer all year round.”
