THE COUNTY of Carmarthenshire is home to a wealth of wildlife and is renowned for its natural beauty, with magnificent coasts, quiet estuaries, steep valleys, and rugged uplands to explore. Throughout the county these sites of natural beauty work as a network to provide habitats for the many species of wildlife in the county.
This year, the Wales Nature Week runs from 22 to 30 July and is celebrating ‘Nature’s Treasures’ across Wales. Carmarthenshire’s various dedicated organisations work to manage our special sites which are home to a variety of species and habitats. From bumblebees to bats and sand dunes to shady woodland, there are plenty of opportunities to explore nature in Carmarthen. Is there one close to you that you can discover during Wales Nature Week?
Why not share your Nature’s Treasure in Carmarthenshire with the Wales Biodiversity Partnership by sharing a photo of a ‘Nature’s Treasure’ near you on social media, using the hashtags #WalesNatureWeek and #NaturesTreasures.
Carmarthenshire extends from the open uplands in the north to the extensive coastline of Carmarthen Bay, with a variety of natural habitats that help make the county so special. There is always somewhere where you can enjoy nature, whatever time of year it is. From Local Nature Reserves to sites of international importance, many of these sites are open to the public.
There are six Local Nature Reserves (LNR) in Carmarthenshire: Pembrey Burrows and Saltings, Ashpits Pond and Pwll Lagoon, North Dock Dunes, Carreg Cennen, Glan-yr-Afon, Kidwelly, and Morfa Berwig, Bynea; with Ynysdawela Nature Park near Brynamman soon to become a LNR. There are also a number of Nature reserves throughout the county managed by other organisations.
Our county also has an extensive network of footpaths and countryside walks throughout the county.
