Local golf club hits a hole in one thanks to hard-hitting junior girls’ commitment

Children at Ysgol y Frenni, Crymych receive a taste of golf

CARDIGAN Golf Club has hit a hole in one this week after the junior girls section was awarded a £1,000 handout from Golf Cymru.

Earlier this year the girls, led by Cerys Jones, produced a bilingual video which they sent to Girls Golf Cymru, which is a national incentive that encourages more girls into golf.  They also included their own ideas on how to get more girls interested in the game.

Thanks to their hard work, they have now been awarded £1,000 towards equipment, marketing, promoting and delivering golf  to schools in and around Cardigan.

They have already helped deliver tri-golf sessions to after-school clubs in two Pembrokeshire schools, namely Ysgol Cilgerran and Ysgol y Frenni in Crymych.   These sessions included fun indoor and outdoor games using plastic clubs and rubber balls which were specifically designed by the Golf Foundation.

Clwb Golff Aberteifi currently has 13 girls who are members of the club, with the majority playing with the junior section on Saturday mornings.

This year’s captain is Faith Randerson, who started as a junior when she was only seven years old.

The club can also boast having three other past female captains,  namely Marni Copeland who is currently on a golf scholarship in Illinois, USA,  Dwynwen Holgate who works as secretary in the Golf Club office, and Rosie Vaughan Jones who works for a golf IT systems company.

In recognition of their latest award, Cardigan Golf Club will be running a free taster session for boys and girls on Saturday, April 22, between 10am and 11am, using  real clubs and real golf balls enabling the children to learn full swings.

All equipment is provided, and if they wish to progress further, then they can sign up for another five  lessons for only £10.

Places are limited, so anyone interested in taking part should register on 01239 621775.
