Body found in River Tawe during search for missing woman, Claire Morgan

Police officers investigating the disappearance of 44-year-old Claire Morgan, who was last seen in Ystalyfera on Saturday night, made a tragic discovery during their search efforts. A body was found in the River Tawe in nearby Ynysmeudwy on Monday, July 24, shortly after 1 pm, following reports of a “medical emergency” in the area. While formal identification is yet to take place, the police have informed Claire Morgan’s family, and the investigation continues.

The search for Claire began after she was last seen in Varteg Road, Ystalyfera, on Saturday night. Concerns for her wellbeing were shared by friends and family, prompting residents and law enforcement to launch a search party. The efforts extended throughout Monday morning.

At 1:28 pm on Monday, three fire crews were called to an incident in Ynysmeudwy, where reports of a body in the River Tawe emerged. The Swift Water Rescue Team was deployed to conduct a thorough search of the river, which led to the discovery of a deceased woman. The body was carefully retrieved using a stretcher and lines, and subsequently transferred to the Ambulance Service crew present at the scene.

Local councillor Alun Llewelyn, representing Cwmllynfell and Ystalyfera, expressed his condolences: “It’s very very sad news. All our thoughts are with Claire’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Many local people joined the police in searching for Claire and will be devastated at this news.”

Ystalyfera RFC, where Claire Morgan was reportedly seen on the evening she went missing, also shared their grief. A statement released by the club expressed their deep sorrow: “We are absolutely gutted and devastated with this recent news. We will support the family as much as we can during this terrible and sad time.”

The investigation into Claire Morgan’s disappearance and the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body in the River Tawe are ongoing. The South Wales Police have confirmed the recovery of the body and are working to establish the formal identification of the deceased.
