Gas explosion rocks Morriston, Swansea, causing widespread damage and chaos

A SUSPECTED gas explosion has rocked the Morriston area of Swansea, causing widespread damage and chaos. Emergency services are currently responding to the incident. 

Eyewitnesses on Twitter have reported a “loud explosion” and homes shaking in the Morriston area, with reports of an “enormous loud bang” heard in Clydach and Swansea Vale.

Alamgir Hossain, who lives opposite the scene of the explosion, described the moment he heard the loud sound and went outside to see a lot of damage to a nearby house. 

He said, “Suddenly I heard a loud sound and we went out and then I saw a lot of damage to the house.”

Another local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, reported seeing a “gust of smoke and roof tiles from a house go up in the air.” They said, “I heard a bang and then saw the smoke and debris. It was very scary.”

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to reports of a gas exploison at 11.20am.

Crews from Morriston, Swansea West, Neath, Gorseinon and Port Talbot were called to an incident in Morriston following several reports of a gas explosion.

A statement said: “As well as Fire and Rescue Service Crews, South Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service are in attendance. South Wales Police have declared a major incident, no further information is available at this time. For more information, please contact South Wales Police.”

Roads in the area have been closed off and people are being asked to stay away from the scene.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown, and it is not clear if there are any injuries or fatalities at this time.
