LAST MONTH, members of the community came together in heartfelt tribute to remember and celebrate the life of one of the village’s most beloved characters – Harri. Friends, family, and neighbours gathered in the newly developed Hendy Community Garden, situated behind the popular Canolfan Gwili, to unveil a memorial bench dedicated to Harri’s memory.

The event was a touching occasion filled with stories, laughter, and reflection, with many in attendance who had been impacted by Harri’s kindness, wisdom, and quiet generosity. A passionate nature enthusiast, devoted educator, and cherished friend, Harri made a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
One moving tribute came from a local resident and friend: “My son Alfie and I first met Harri five years ago during the COVID lockdown on one of our morning walks. He was tending to his garden – a stunning bed of tulips in full bloom. We chatted about worms and weeding, and I remember thinking how lovely he seemed.
”We soon crossed paths again on the Hendy Nature Trail and discovered a shared love of wildlife, especially bats. Our summer bat walks, led by volunteer Sue Jones, became a regular adventure.
”Harri, with his bat detector in hand, was in his element. He was always generous with his knowledge and so encouraging to Alfie – they would chat away in Welsh, two kindred spirits from different generations.

”Harri didn’t talk much about himself, but we later learned about the extraordinary life he had led – from coaching football and teaching, to trekking to Everest Base Camp and exploring the Arctic. We feel so lucky to have known him and miss him dearly.”
The bench in Harri’s memory, now placed in the heart of the community garden, stands as a symbol of his love for the outdoors, for people, and for quiet acts of kindness. The community garden itself is set to launch soon, and it will offer a peaceful space for all to enjoy – with opportunities for volunteering throughout the week.
