CRUCIAL Crew made a welcome face-to-face return to Swansea on the 5th June after two years of virtual sessions due to the imposed Covid social distancing measures.

The event was held over a two week period at the fantastic Swansea National Waterfront Museum at SA1 and involved Year 6 pupils from Primary schools throughout Swansea travelling to the venue to receive various important personal safety messages.

The overarching aim of Crucial Crew is to raise awareness of potential dangers and give young people the skills and knowledge to address them.

This year Crucial Crew had representation from the following agencies;

Mid & West Wales Fire Service – Home Fire Safety

Network Rail – Safety on the Railway

Food Standards – Food Hygiene

RNLI – Council Water Safety

Council Road Safety

Council Evolve Services – Safety On-line

Crimestoppers – Reporting Incidents

Council Involvement Team – Feeling Safe

National Grid – Electrical Safety

The event was arranged and managed by Swansea Council’s Community Safety Team. Paul Evans, Community Safety Coordinator said “I’ve had the pleasure to work on Crucial Crew events for the past 25 years. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our year 6 pupils to receive really important safety messages. Year 6 pupils are beginning to get more independence whilst out in our communities and the messages they get really make a difference to their safety.”

Cabinet Member for Well-being Alyson Pugh said: “I was really impressed with how much information the pupils received in a two hour session. Only year 6 pupils attend Crucial Crew as they will shortly be going to secondary school when they may be needing to travel further to attend school, live more independently than before and also may be entrusted with more responsibility at home.  Swansea is a great place to live and now hopefully a safer place for all of our young people.”
