Tackling the climate emergency in Swansea: Public asked for their thoughts and ideas

A survey on the drive to make Swansea net zero carbon is asking residents: What actions should your council make top priority?

A previous Swansea Council survey confirmed that there’s an overwhelming public demand in the area for action on climate change.

Results from the new survey will help the council make Swansea net zero carbon city by 2050. The council – which itself aims to be net zero by 2030 – is already working with city organisations to hit the targets which will help fight climate change and the nature emergency.

Andrea Lewis, the council’s joint deputy leader, cabinet member for service transformation and councillor champion for climate change, said: “Our survey continues our conversation with others as we continue to develop a strategic city-wide approach to achieving a net zero Swansea.

“It’s aimed at all residents of all ages and organisations of all types. The results will help us prioritise our actions as we help the city address this era-defining crisis.

“I encourage people and organisations right around Swansea to take the survey; the short amount of time they take on this will help us invest our efforts in their futures.”

The council has a charter on climate action and a web page on which the public can make their own climate change pledges – www.swansea.gov.uk/makeclimatepledge.

It’s working with key partners on climate change and is inspiring others to join them in making a pledge as part of city-wide action.

Positive action already being taken by the council includes moving to a paperless office system where possible, recycling and reusing old council furniture and expanding the city’s cycling and walking network.

The council is including green infrastructure in new developments, especially nature-based solutions that capture carbon, and is reducing waste and consumption across the organisation.

Major schemes include the upgrading the council’s fleet of electric vehicles, installing EV charging points for local motorists and focusing more pension funds on sustainable investment.

Cllr Lewis said: “Swansea people have an appetite for action on climate change and are offering us widespread support on our work in this vitally important field. We all want to leave a better planet for future generations.

“I thank all those who consider taking part in our latest survey; it’ll help us achieve so much.”

The new survey is open now and is due to close at 11.59pm on December 20. You can access the survey here – www.bit.ly/SCccs23
