Woman sentenced for crashing car after taking cannabis

St James Street, Narberth

A 28-year-old woman who crashed her car whilst being over twice the specified drug-drive limit has appeared before magistrates for sentence.

Police were called to St James Street, Narberth at around 9.30am on December 21, following reports of a single vehicle collision.

There they discovered an MG HS and its driver, who identified herself as Chelsea McLaren.

“She was very upset,” Crown Prosecutor Sian Vaughan told Haverfordwest magistrates earlier this week.

A drugs wipe proved positive and McLaren, 28, of the Old Mart Ground, Narberth was taken to a police custody suite for further drugs tests.  These confirmed that she had been driving with 5 mcg of Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol in her blood.  The specified limit is 2.

McLaren, who pleaded guilty to the charge of drug-driving, was represented in court by Mr Tom Lloyd.

“My client is of clean character and doesn’t even have any points on her licence,” he said.

“The loss of her licence is going to have a huge impact on her, particularly as she has a five-year-old son.”

After considering the evidence, McLaren was disqualified from driving for 15 months.  She was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £48 surcharge.
