Goodwick claim Division 1 title after seeing off Swifts

GOODWICK United claimed the Division 1 title on Saturday (Apr 15) as they beat Monkton Swifts 3-1.

Ahead of the game, Goodwick knew anything less than a win would allow rivals Hakin to chance to catch them up with their games in hand.

However, having missed out on the title last season, Goodwick were keen to get their hands back on the league title.

With half an hour gone it was Goodwick who took the lead as Jake Smith scored his first goal of the season for the first team.

They did not have it all their own way though and four minutes Ben Steele equalised for the Swifts.

It looked as if the first half would finish level but on the stroke of half time Will Haworth scored his eleventh goal of the season.

Ten minutes into the second half the Swifts were awarded a penalty but Steele saw his spot kick saved by Goodwick keeper Kyle Marsh.

Declan Carroll then saw a free kick pushed round the post by Marsh as he kept the visitors in the lead.

Goodwick continued to press for a third goal and came close with a long throw in but Rhys Jones and Scott Delaney saw their efforts blocked as the ball pinged around the Monkton box.

Then with five minutes to go, Goodwick were given a free kick wide on the left. Rather than send the ball into the box, Jones sent the ball towards goal and his effort flew into the net off the post. It sparked wild celebrations amongst the players and supporters as they knew they had all but sealed the win.

Goodwick held on to secure the win and the league title after a fantastic season.

They will now look to make it a double-winning season when they play the Senior Cup Final on Saturday, April 29.
