Four-goal Carmarthen see off Gwent

CARMARTHEN were keen to start this match on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon (Jan 26) strongly.

The table is very tight at the top so a win was crucial for the team. Carmarthen started strong with some excellent passing and driving up the wings by the midfielders Ffion Evans, Rhian Moremon, Anna Knuckles, Sophie Palmer, Megan Henry and Anna Heath.

A creative attack found a foot in the D which resulted in a penalty corner. Maya Davies injected the ball to Palmer who hit the ball and deflected off the goalkeeper then Davies found the ball once again and slotted the ball in the bottom corner of the goal, 1-0.

Gwent came back with a vengeance and applied a lot of pressure on Carmarthen’s defence but Keira Griffiths, Catrin Davies, Nia Sutton and Ffion Dart held their own and worked with goal keeper Jackie Marshall to keep the ball away from their own goal.

Another well worked attack found Carmarthen with another short corner, the ball was injected to Palmer and swept wide to Dart who played the ball back to the top of the D where Megan Henry was waiting and swept the ball past the goalkeeper, 2-0.

After half time Carmarthen were keen to extend their lead with forwards Ffion Wyn Jones, Ffion Church, Maya Davies and Rebecca Cartland passing the ball around the oppositions defence to create chances at goal. A strong ball from Anna Heath found Catrin at the edge of the D who swept the ball in and found the bottom right hand corner past the goalie, 3-0.

The fourth goal for Carmarthen came with a hit out from the defence which found wing back Anna Knuckles. She used her skill and pace to pass the Gwent midfielders and passed the ball to Ffion Church who was free in the D and hit the ball into the back of the net, 4-0.

Keira Griffiths was awarded MOM by both teams for her relentless efforts in defence and her creative drives up the wing creating many chances for Carmarthen to score.
