Vikings send holders packing

HAKIN United produced an excellent second half performance as they knocked holders Goodwick United out of the West Wales Cup on Saturday (Mar 2).

Wind and rain did not make things easy for both sides but despite that the game was not short of action.

Goodwick had taken the lead in the first half but two goals from Nicky Woodrow helped them turn the game around.

The visitors had chances early on but they couldn’t find the back of the net.

However, their pressure eventually told as Goodwick won three corners in a row and Keiron O’Brien was on hand to head the ball home from the third.

Vikings keeper James Manson was then called upon as he made an excellent save to keep the score at one.

Hakin looked to respond in the second half and just five minutes in they were level as a Ryan Wilson corner evaded everyone and flew into the back of the net.

Moments later the home side were ahead as Goodwick keeper Gwilt only cleared the ball as far as Woodrow who shot into the empty net to make it 2-1.

Cameron Thomas then swung a corner into the box and Woodrow was in the right place to head the ball home to all but seal Hakin’s passage into the last four.

Things got a bit heated towards the end but Hakin saw the game out to book their place in the semi-finals.
