FIRES from a blaze at Mynydd Newydd Common in Penlan, Swansea, resulted in families being evacuated from their homes.
Two fire crews were called to the scene at 6.55pm on Monday night.
Local homeowners described the blaze, believe to have been started deliberately, as “the worst fire they had seen” as it caused trees behind their homes to burst into flames.
Residents have also claimed they heard one of a group of young males admit he had started the fire and then voice his regret about the blaze.
One local resident, Esther Reeves, 52, said: “There was a gang of boys shouting ‘Fireman Sam’ and you ‘black b******’ and ‘b*******’ at the fire crews.
“One boy was saying ‘I’m sorry I have done it.’ The fires happen all the time.”
Another local resident Lisa Patell, 53, said: “The end houses were evacuated.
“The tree was on fire next door and the people on the end had their garden on fire. It happens two or three times a year.”
Ms. Patell added that she couldn’t recall a fire as bad as this one, saying: “It’s disgusting, it’s one of the worst fires that we have had. They had to close off the road.”
Fire crews in two other areas of Wales were also tackling major fires this week, one on the side of a mountain in Rhigos in Rhondda Cynon Taf on Monday evening.
The other being on Fairwood Common, Gower, also on Monday, March 7.
