LUMEN project provides early detection of lung cancer

ELUNED Morgan MS and Nia Griffith MP visited Prince Philip Hospital to learn more about the Lung Cancer Symptom Assessment Line (LUMEN) pilot project.

Funded by Moondance Cancer Initiative, Hywel Dda University Health Board’s LUMEN pilot project is a nurse-led service that focuses on the early detection of lung cancer in people living in Carmarthenshire.

This pilot is currently available to anyone aged 40 or over, and registered with a GP in Carmarthenshire who is experiencing the following symptoms:

• Cough (more than 3 weeks)
• Losing weight without trying
• Shortness of breath
• Hoarse voice
• Repeated chest infections
• Chest pain
• More tired than usual
• Loss of appetite
• A lung condition with changing symptoms

Explaining the aims of the project, Patricia Rees, Lung Cancer Triage Nurse said: “The LUMEN project provides people living in Carmarthenshire, who are experiencing respiratory problems either as smokers or non-smokers, with direct access to a specialist nurse who can discuss symptoms, and if appropriate, refer them directly for further investigation.”

If successful, it is hoped that the pilot will be extended to both Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion next year.

Dr Savita Shanbhag, GP Cancer Lead said: “We were pleased to be able to meet with the local politicians to raise awareness of the work of the LUMEN team. We believe that enabling individuals to call our phone line helps us to detect symptoms early and refer patients onwards for early diagnosis. We are thankful to Moondance for funding this innovative project.”

After hearing about the service, Nia Griffith MP said: “This service is a really positive way to encourage people to seek help if they are experiencing the relevant symptoms. Getting the message out about early diagnosis is so important for saving lives.”

Elected members for Carmarthenshire were invited to visit the LUMEN project to meet with the team and learn more about how the project enables early diagnosis.

If you, a family member, or friend have any of the above symptoms, call 0300 30366142 – Monday to Friday 9am-2pm to speak to the LUMEN team.
