Carmarthen suffer defeat in Bridgend

CARMARTHEN men’s first team travelled to a very sunny Bridgend to take on Bridgend thirds on Saturday (Mar 5), whom they had beaten in the reverse fixture 1-0 early in the season.

Carmarthen got to work early, forcing a few short corners through some ambitious attacking play, ultimately resulting in a penalty flick.

With experienced players and go-to penalty takers missing, unprecedented scenes unfolded when keeper and captain Craig Jones marched the length of the pitch in full pads to take the penalty, slotting it cooly into the right side net, and claiming the first goal in team history to be scored by a goalkeeper.

The game went back and forth until  until half time with both sides having plenty of chances and Carmarthen took their 1-0 lead into the break.

The second half proved too much for Carmarthen, who despit putting on the early pressure again, could not extend their lead.

Bridgend grew into the game and utilised a polished set piece game to claim three goals in the half, showcasing a ruthless efficiency at penalty corners. The game ended 3-1 to the hosts.

Carmarthen’s performance had plenty of positives, and should they continue it is reasonable to assume better results will follow.

Carmarthen will look to bounce back next weekend when they take on Whitchurch at home, as they approach their final run of games to close out the season.

Man of match went to Ollie Shaw for having another brilliant game in his new position this season, work rate and sweeping up once again totally warrant his man of match.
