“Enjoy Summer Safely”: Public Health Wales promotes health measures for the season

With the arrival of warmer weather and longer days, many individuals are eagerly anticipating holidays, festivals, and reunions with loved ones. While summer provides an excellent opportunity to unwind and relish more time outdoors, it is crucial to remember some simple steps we can take to maintain our well-being and safeguard those around us.

Public Health Wales is actively encouraging people in Wales to embrace the concept of “Enjoy Summer Safely” by implementing easy measures to minimize the spread of common illnesses. These include regular handwashing with soap and water, ensuring that individuals and their families are up to date with their vaccinations, and staying home when feeling unwell.

Giri Shankar, the Director of Health Protection at Public Health Wales, emphasized the significance of these guidelines. He stated, “Summer is a great time to get together with family and loved ones, and many of us will be enjoying get-togethers, days out, and holidays at home and abroad. Vaccinations are the best form of defense, so make sure that you and your family are up to date. If you are traveling abroad, check which vaccinations you need to stay protected.”

Shankar also reminded the public that the misconception of COVID-19 and other viruses vanishing with the arrival of winter is false. He cautioned, “Unfortunately, they haven’t [gone away] and are still a risk to those who are more vulnerable. So, please remember to regularly wash your hands, and if you are unwell, stay away from others so we can keep ourselves and our loved ones well and still enjoy summer together.”

Furthermore, Public Health Wales is offering advice on various aspects of summer safety, such as sun protection, swimming safety, dining out, and safe travel. Shankar highlighted the importance of remaining vigilant during the warmer weather, stating, “It is also important to be vigilant and remember basic safety advice this summer when you are enjoying the warmer weather. Protect yourself from the sun by wearing loose-fitting clothing, high-factor sun cream, and sunglasses with UV protection. Drinking plenty of water will also keep you hydrated.”

Looking ahead, Public Health Wales plans to share additional guidance on water safety, safe barbecue practices, and travel tips in the coming weeks. These resources aim to help individuals and their families stay well throughout the summer season.
