A visit from overseas: At UWTSD

A COMPANY of student artists, from California State University at Fullerton (CSFU) visited Carmarthen in February to perform the play ‘The Empty Space’ at University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) in Carmarthen to celebrate 15 years of partnership between the two institutions.

Anne James, Professor of Theatre & Dance at CSFU and coordinator for the UWTSD/CSUF exchange travelled with company of students to perform ‘The Empty Space’, an original play, written and directed by Siena Marilyn Ledger at the University’s Carmarthen campus last week.

Anne said: “We are thrilled to have brought a company of student artists overseas to debut internationally, ‘The Empty Space’ by student playwright, Siena Marilyn Ledger, at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. ”

This venture has been developed as part of our New Works Physical Theatre Initiative which fosters new work, physical theatre style storytelling, and inter-college collaborations.

“We are forging new artistic ground for CSUF’s College of the Arts. As Coordinator of our Exchange with UWTSD, I knew we would be amongst kindred ‘ creative ‘ spirits here. ”

We could not have felt more welcomed and supported by the UWTSD community. It has truly been a life changing experience for many of our students.”

The International Exchange Programme between UWTSD and CSUF is one of the most established at UWTSD. It was initially a School-based exchange partnership which was created by the School of Performing Arts and has resulted in a number of in-coming and outgoing Acting and Theatre Design and Production students.

The International Office has played an important role in developing the relationship and supporting students involved in the exchange from both campuses.

CSUF is a major regional university in a vital, flourishing area that includes Orange County, metropolitan Los Angeles and the expanding Inland Empire. The beautiful, 236-acre campus is set in Fullerton in north Orange County, about 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles and about 21 miles from nearby beaches.

CSUF has more than 37,000 students and approximately 1,800 full- and part-time faculty members. The University offers 107 degree programs in eight colleges.

It is ranked with such prestigious schools as Juilliard, New York University, Boston University, and Northwestern University.

As part of the UWTSD commitment to Internationalisation and creating Global Citizens there is a longstanding study abroad programme and a number of reciprocal exchange programmes with partner institutions available to students.

The Study Abroad program provides students with sound academic knowledge, and is also structured to enable students to enjoy the rich diversity of cultural and social experiences available in Wales and at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

The University has links in the USA, Canada, in Europe through the Erasmus programme and in China through the Chinese Studies programme.
