A STUDENT from Carmarthen is set to make a positive difference by taking part in an expedition with a sustainable development charity.

17-year-old Ben Butler will be working with Raleigh International alongside other volunteers from Tanzania for seven weeks as part of the charity’s expedition programme.

Raleigh expeditions inspire young people between the ages of 17 and 24 to contribute to long-term development projects.

These projects offer young people the chance to develop personally and learn about teamwork and leadership on missions that are of genuine value to different communities around the world.

Ben will be living and working in a rural community, getting stuck into a host of different sustainable community and environment projects whilst working in some of Tanzania’s most remote locations.

The projects he will be taking part in have been set up to help improve the resilience of the community, aiding them to protect their natural resources which is hoped will make a genuine difference.

As part of the adventure phase of the expedition, he is also set to take part in a challenging trek.

Ben said: “I am really looking forward to the challenges ahead. My dad, David, and his staff at Clay Shaw Butler accountants in Carmarthen have been raising money for charities for a number of years.

“I thought this was a good opportunity for me to raise funds for Raleigh International to help a community in Tanzania over my summer holidays.

Stacey Adams, CEO of Raleigh International, said: “Raleigh expeditions are designed to challenge and support our volunteers to develop skills that will have a positive impact not just on their lives, but also in their home communities upon their return.

“We believe in the passion, energy and creativity of young people and recognise that they must be involved with development if it is to be sustainable for future generations.”

Ben has set up a JustGiving page for any supporters who would like to make a donation, however small, at justgiving.com/Ben-Butler5.

All funds raised for Raleigh International will contribute towards making a tangible and lasting change in rural communities in countries such as Borneo, Costa Rica, Nepal, Nicaragua and Tanzania.
