THE PEMBROKESHIRE Friends of Prostate Cymru have been given a New Year’s boost thanks to the fundraising efforts of a local man.
Frank Hart of Milford Haven had undertaken the challenge of growing his beard for an entire year, finally having it shaved off at a hugely successful charity fundraiser recently, supported by Martha’s Vineyard and attended by former British Lion, Wales and Pontypool Front Row Legend Graham Price as a keen supporter of Prostate Cymru.
The shave off was expertly conducted by Michael Todaro of Todaro’s Hairdressing.
Raising in excess of £4,500 – over £1000 of which was raised on the night from the proceeds of raffle and auction prizes donated by many local businesses and rugby regions.
Frank wanted to support a charity close to his heart. Frank said: “My aim has been to raise awareness of prostate cancer and support Welsh men in their treatment of the illness.
“I have received a great deal of support, and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed.”
Frank’s fundraising challenge has been supported by the Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru, as well as his employer, South Hook LNG who recognised Frank’s novel fundraising approach with a financial donation through the Company’s Staff Community Engagement scheme.
Ralph Rees of The Pembrokeshire Friends of Prostate Cymru said: “This has been a superb effort by Frank over the last twelve months in not only raising such a magnificent sum, but also in heightening awareness of the disease which affects 1 in 8 men in the principality, and 1 in 3 if three if there is a family history.”
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Welsh men, with over 550 of them dying from the disease each year. Prostate Cymru is the leading men’s health charity in Wales dealing with prostate issues.
It is still possible to support Frank, by visiting his JustGiving page. It is hoped that the final amount raised will reach the £5000 mark. www. justgiving.com/FrankHart-Beard/
