New plaque unveiled at Llandovery College

Memorial service: Plaque unveiled.

A MEMORIAL service was held this week at Llandovery College to unveil a new plaque commemorating fallen soldiers of World War One. The plaque lists 82 names of former college pupils and masters who fought and died in the conflict of 1914-1918.
The service took place in the college chapel on March 8 and was led and preached by former pupil and vicar of Newgale, Reverend Michael Rowlands. Also in attendance was the Archdeacon of Carmarthen the Venerable Roger Hughes, along with warden Dr. Brinley Jones, and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Wales, Medwyn Hughes.
The plaque was donated by benefactor, and old boy, Harri Evans, after the original plaque from 1934 had fallen into a state of disrepair. ‘The Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ was sounded by Under Officer Stacey Parsons whilst the Archdeacon blessed the plaque.
Amongst the names on the commemorative memorial was Noel Evans, a former pupil who in 1916 scored an incredible 7 tries in the annual game with rivals Christ College. He went on to serve in the Great War and was unfortunate to die from wounds sustained on the final day of the war in 1918.
