Ploughing accolades for farmers

ploughing accoladesTHE well attended annual dinner of the St Davids and district Ploughing Association took place at the Square & Compass Inn, Croesgoch and was presided over by the chairman, Michael James.

During the evening the chairman of the South West Wales Ploughing Association, Gordon Harries, announced the winners of the senior and junior area championships for the past year. They were both members of the St Davids Society, father and son Rhodri and James George of St Bride’s View, Roch and were presented with suitable mementos by the Society President, Ellis Jones.

Rhodri had represented Wales at the World championships held in Canada last July and was placed a highly commendable 7th overall. He expressed his most grateful thanks to all fellow ploughmen who had supported him and wished him well for the competition. He said that he, and Wyn Jones of Cardigan who had ploughed in the reversible section, had nothing but praise for the generous help, support and warm hospitality shown by their hosts –“There was nothing that they would not do to help in every possible way” he said.

Mr Harries wished every success to Rhodri who will again lead the Welsh team for the 2014 World championships to be held from 29 August -8 September near Bordeaux in France. Also Wilfred Richards of the Llawhaden Society who is to represent Wales in the coming Six Nations challenge.

This years St Davids ploughing match is to take place at Parcyreithan, Mathry on Sunday, 23 February with the Llandygwydd YFC match at Cardigan on the previous day. A number of top class Irish ploughmen are expected to compete at both events.
