Welsh pub named best vegan restaurant in Europe

A Welsh pub has clinched the title of the top-ranked vegan eatery in Europe. The Queen Inn, situated in Cwmbran, made the bold switch to a fully plant-based menu two years ago during Veganuary 2022.

Fast forward to today, and The Queen Inn has secured the accolade of being the fourth-best plant-based restaurant globally and the leading one in Europe, as per the vegan guide, Happy Cow.

Its menu features gourmet renditions of traditional pub favourites, such as ‘fish’ and chips and ‘chicken’ and ‘bacon’ pie—all crafted without animal-derived ingredients.

Established in the 1800s, The Queen Inn remains a cherished family-run establishment in the heart of this Welsh town. Owner Ryan Edwards expressed being “over the moon” at reaching the pinnacle of the rankings.

Branding itself as the “world’s first plant-based steakhouse,” The Queen Inn is committed to reshaping plant-based dining. The pub offers hyper-realistic plant-based meat alternatives like Redefine Meat flank and Juicy Marbles filet, which have been instrumental in drawing both vegans and non-vegans alike.

Ryan Edwards explained, “Most of our patrons are carnivores seeking a cruelty-free alternative to their favourite pub grub,” noting that even non-vegans appreciate the quality and taste of their dishes.

In addition to ‘meaty’ options, The Queen Inn caters to vegetable-based preferences with dishes like Cauliflower steak, Fable shiitake mushroom pie, and Chana masala.

Following its crowning by Happy Cow, The Queen Inn has experienced a significant surge in bookings. Glowing testimonials abound, like this one from TripAdvisor: “Blew my mind. Went for a birthday meal with my family and spent ages deciding because it all looked incredible. I will be returning very soon to try the rest of the menu!! Highly, highly recommend!”
