Cymru gears up to unleash young talents in friendly against Gibraltar

CYMRU boss Robert Page is gearing up for an exciting opportunity to showcase the nation’s burgeoning football talent as they prepare to face Gibraltar in a friendly match. In his words, this encounter represents the “perfect opportunity” to introduce a fresh batch of young players into the senior squad.

Among the rising stars receiving their first senior call-ups are Charlie Savage and Owen Beck, both of whom have also earned spots in Cymru under-21 squad. Adding to the mix is the uncapped Luke Harris, who has once again found his name on the roster. Page has confirmed that all three promising talents will see action against Gibraltar.

Page, who has been an advocate for nurturing talent through the youth ranks, commented, “I think it’s the time to introduce these youngsters and have a look.” He emphasises the importance of the pathway for young players to progress from the youth teams to the senior squad, a concept he has actively promoted during his tenure.

Joe Low of Wycombe Wanderers has been called up to the senior squad as a replacement for Ben Cabango of Swansea City, who is sidelined due to injury. This move underscores the squad’s adaptability and readiness to include emerging talents when needed.

Cymru will square off against Gibraltar in Wrexham on Wednesday, October 11th, in a friendly encounter. Subsequently, they will host Croatia in a Euro 2024 qualifier at the Cardiff City Stadium just four days later, promising an exciting week for Welsh football enthusiasts.

Charlie Savage, the 20-year-old midfielder who recently made a permanent move from Manchester United to Reading, is one of the notable new inclusions. His progress and commitment to playing regular football outside the under-23s league have impressed Page, who shared, “He can’t just keep playing under-23s football.” Page’s advice to Savage to pursue a career elsewhere appears to have borne fruit, with Savage making a significant impact at Reading.

Owen Beck, a 21-year-old left-back on loan at Dundee from Liverpool, also joins the ranks. He carries the footballing legacy of his great-uncle, Ian Rush, the celebrated Liverpool and Wales player, which adds to the intrigue surrounding his inclusion.

Eighteen-year-old Fulham midfielder Luke Harris, who has been around the senior squad during the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign but has yet to make his debut, is another talent Page is keen to nurture. Despite limited minutes at his club in the Premier League this season, Page believes that this game presents the “perfect opportunity” for Harris to gain valuable experience.
