Exhibition to inspire young artists

LLANELLI schoolchildren are brushing up their creative skills to get involved in an exciting exhibition of International art coming to Ffwrnes in March.

Curated by Sarah Hopkins and Michele Laugharne Perrott in a joint partnership between Coleg Sir Gâr and Theatre Sir Gâr, three printmakers have been invited to showcase their work at the exhibition.

The exhibition will feature work by well-established Pakistani printmakers Atif Khan and Sameera Khan and Indian printmaker Vinita Voogd.

Local schoolchildren involved with Coleg Sir Gâr’s National Art & Design Saturday Club will be working closely with the project, responding with their own artwork, exploring traditional and digital media through a range of workshops at the college.

The project has culminated from Sarah Hopkins’ involvement with the artists in previous projects, including Contemporary Pakistani Printmakers, which toured the UK in 2006.

Sarah Hopkins, head of creative industries at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “I’m delighted to bring such a diverse range of printmaking into our community and I hope the public will engage with us.

Vinita Voogd will be flying from California to attend the opening, and is looking forward to seeing how the young people will respond … it will be an incredible experience for our Saturday Club pupils.”

Vinita Voogd will also be running a professional masterclass for artists at Swansea Print Workshop during her visit.

Sharon Casey, manager of Theatre Sir Gâr is excited to be showcasing the work of such established international artists at Ffwrnes. She said: “With the return of regular programming of a series of art exhibitions in 2018 curated by Welsh artist Michele Laugharne Perrott, we will be introducing both local and national artists to the people of Llanelli and the surrounding areas.

“In supporting local schools and colleges we are providing an ideal opportunity for students to expand their knowledge within the art world.”
