JOE THOMAS, one of the stars of the beloved comedy The Inbetweeners, has confirmed that discussions have taken place regarding a possible revival of the iconic show. Speaking on the Always Be Comedy with James Gill podcast, Thomas shared insights into the ongoing conversations about bringing back the show that captured the hearts of many.
Having appeared in three series, two films, and a reunion special, it has been a decade since fans last saw the characters of The Inbetweeners on their screens. Naturally, Thomas was asked whether there had been any talks about reuniting the original cast, including Simon Bird, James Buckley, and Blake Harrison, for a new project.
Thomas confirmed, “The conversation has happened in various forms, and all of us feel like it would be nice.” He expressed his fondness for his former co-stars, saying he would “always work with them again” and discussed potential ideas for what a comeback could look like.
However, Thomas acknowledged the challenges of returning to the characters now that they are all in their 40s. He suggested that a film would be more feasible than a new series, given the passage of time. “I don’t think they could do another series. It would have to be a movie,” he explained. “A movie, I think, works with the right idea. It would be challenging to do another series, just because of the timeline. But with the film, there are all sorts of options.”
Among the ideas floated by Thomas was a storyline involving the quartet going on a stag do to Las Vegas or perhaps forming a five-a-side football team to stay in touch as adults. However, he acknowledged that these scenarios would not see the characters in the same context that fans remember.
While some cast members, such as James Buckley and Simon Bird, have previously stated that returning to The Inbetweeners could feel “sad and creepy” now that they are older, Thomas remained optimistic. “We’re all still around, we’re all still in each other’s lives. We all still like each other. And if it was something that came up, I think we would want to do it,” he said.
Reflecting on the potential challenges, Thomas added, “Everybody’s anxiety would be, ‘Will it be as good?’. That is what we would be going in with.”
As fans eagerly speculate on what a third Inbetweeners film might entail, the possibility of seeing the boys navigating married life and mortgages is an intriguing one. Whether or not the revival comes to fruition, it is clear that the love for The Inbetweeners remains strong among its cast and audience alike.
