Toddler becomes first welsh child under 14 to die from Covid-19

THE first child in Wales under the age of 14 to die from Covid has been confirmed.

Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate of the child who, according to the Office of National Statistics, died between September 10 and 17.

There are no further details about the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death, it is not confirmed if the child had any underlying health conditions or if Covid was the sole cause.

Office of National Statistic data also shows that in the same week there was only one registered death of a person under the age of 19 in Wales, a female between the ages of 1 and 4.

She is now the second child in Wales to die from Covid-19 after a teenager died earlier in the pandemic.

A spokesperson for Public Health Wales said: “We have reported the death of a child aged between one and 14 years in our analysis of ONS Covid-19 data. This is not the first death of a child related to coronavirus in Wales, as we have previously reported the death of a child over the age of 14 in an earlier period as part of our reporting in the 15-44 age range.

“We will not provide any further details relating to these individuals, and we would ask that the privacy of families is respected. Public Health Wales offers our condolences to all those affected by loss resulting from coronavirus.”

Office of National Statistic data shows that just over 8,000 people in Wales have died with Covid up to September 1, 2021. 8,002 Covid-related deaths have been recorded during the pandemic, that data also shows a steep drop in the number of daily deaths in the third wave up to this point.
