THE 2024 lawn bowls season for Llandeilo Bowling Club (LBC) has now officially commenced with the formal opening on Saturday 13th April.

Despite the inclement weather there was a big turnout for the opening with Llandeilo Town Council’s Mayor, Christoph Fischer bowling the first wood of the season encouraged by his consort Kate Glanville and Cllr Edward Thomas.

Determined that the rain would not stop play 9 ends were played on several rinks before the Club’s guests retreated to the Clubhouse for a sumptuous tea prepared by members and followed by a raffle.

Gareth James, LBC president, referred to the success over the winter period that several of the lawn bowls members had had both in short mat and indoor bowls. Their success was a reflection of the exceptional talent with a number trialling to play for Wales in the next season or having played for Wales in the season now concluding.

The Club’s short mat team, having been elevated to the first division of Carmarthenshire Short Mat Bowls Association, had secured their continuation in this division for the next season and were showing steady improvement and promise.

Jamie Davies, Ena Williams and Doug Davies, captains of the men’s, ladies and veterans’ lawn bowls teams were wished every success on the green for the season.

The Town’s Mayor, Christoph Fisher, recognised that a lot of work had been done by volunteers to improve the bowling green over the last two winters and he commented that whenever he passed the green it was a joy to hear the spirit and fun that was being had by all.

Cllr Edward Thomas said that LBC was particularly important to him because of the prominent role
his father had played in the Club in years gone by. He expressed the view that by now the asset
transfer of sports and recreational facilities in Llandeilo to the Town Council would ensure a more
secure future given the current financial pressures on public funding.

LBC will be holding an open day for anyone interested in having a go on Saturday April 27th from 1pm onwards (the club is situated behind the Fire Station). No previous experience is necessary. Bowls and free coaching will be provided. All you need is flat foot wear. LBC looks forward to welcoming you.
