Jenkins calls support for Port Talbot

Screen Shot 2016-02-23 at 11.19.12PLAID CYMRU AM Bethan Jenkins has set out actions that Plaid Cymru wants to see taken in its fight to save the steel industry in Wales. Bethan Jenkins said that communities in her region were under severe pressure because of the uncertainty caused by the crisis in the steel industry, and called for governments on all levels to look at what could be done to support the steel industry.

Plaid Cymru South West AM Bethan Jenkins said: “Plaid Cymru is extremely concerned with the state of the Welsh steel industry, and I want to see governments on all levels investigate what can be done to support it. I have taken the opportunity over the past few weeks to speak with many of those affected by Tata’s recent announcement. They are in a desperate situation and want to know what politicians in all institutions will do to support them.

“The Welsh Government has announced measures that it considers to be sufficient to protect the future of the steel industry in Wales, but it is clear to me that much more will need to be done. Plaid Cymru has set out action that we want to see the government take to support the industry. We want the Welsh Government to look at the possibility of entering into a public-private partnership, and to create a temporary business rates relief scheme to help the plant through the most difficult times.

“Plaid Cymru also wants to investigate options for combating the influence that Chinese steel has on the market, and to consider how we can strengthen market for Welsh steel.

“Wales’ steel industry is under severe threat, and we must act quickly if we are to support the industry though these most difficult times. There can be a bright future for the steel industry in Wales, but only Plaid Cymru has set out how we can achieve it.”
