THIS week, (April 6), a 2.9% rise to the basic state pension will come into force, equating to £119.30 a week. The 2.9% rise matches the rise in average earnings.
Commenting on the state pension increase, which comes into force today, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance and Europe, Nick Ramsay AM, told The Herald:“State pension has today risen by its largest amount in 15 years to the benefit of hundreds of thousands of people across Wales.
“This is welcome news indeed – especially for those who’ve worked hard all their lives and contributed a great deal to society.
“The extra money in their back pockets is well-deserved and will provide older people with more financial security and independence.
“It complements Welsh Conservative plans to make Wales a more age-friendly nation.
“If elected to government in May, a Welsh Conservative would take a number of measures to achieve this – from designating a Minister for Older People and slashing residential care costs to introducing a Rights of Older People Bill and tackling disruptive cold calling.”
