COLWYN BAY booked their place in the last 16 of the Welsh Cup on Friday night as they beat Ruthin Town 5-1.

Goals from Cai Owen and Mitch Bryant either side of half time ultimately proved crucial for the Bay who will now look forward to Monday’s draw.

It was Ruthin though who enjoyed a good spell of pressure early on but were unable to find the back of the net.

Matt Hill went close with one effort and then saw another saved by Bay keeper Andy Coughlin.

The home side came more into the game and were twice denied as Ryan Goldston kept out efforts from Mitch Bryant and Joe Williams.

Then as half time approached it was the Bay who took the lead as Cai Owen found the back of the net.

It got even better for them at the start of the second half as Mitch Bryant scored to double the Bay’s lead.

Bryant then grabbed his second and the Bay’s third goal on 65 minutes as Ruthin’s chances of getting back into the game began to fade away.

A super strike from Danny Edwards made it 4-0 ten minutes later before Ruthin pulled a goal back.

Jamie Cumming got the goal for the visitors but it proved to be a consolation effort.

And it was the home side who had the last word as sub Jack Higgins made it 5-1.

Ruthin’s Rhys Rowlands suffered an injury on the hour mark and after the game the Bay took to their social media to send their best wishes to the player.
