HAVERFORDWEST earned their first win of the season as they beat second placed Pontyberem on Saturday (Oct 22).

It was the Blues who started well and they were rewarded when Scott Candler went over for the first try of the game.

Mikey Jones then added the conversion to give the hosts a deserved 7-0 lead.

Pontyberem responded when Matthew Murphy crossed over for a try but the conversion attempt was missed.

Haverfordwest then extended their lead when Mikey Jones slotted over a penalty.

However, the away side came back again and scored their second try from Wayne Williams, and Craig Evans added the extras to give Pontyberem a two point lead.

They could have extended their lead shortly before the break but Evans sent a penalty wide of the posts and the score remained 10-12 when the half time whistle went.

In the second half, both sides battled away looking to swing the game in their favour but early penalties from Jones and Evans left the score at 13-15.

Gareth John then put the Blues ahead by a point at 16-15 with another penalty.

Iwan Harries then went over for Pontyberem to put them ahead but the conversion was missed.

That meant the Blues were still within a score of their opponents and, after some good work, Matthew Phillips crossed over to put the Blues ahead and Jones added the extra two points.

Haverfordwest then held on bravely as they secured a welcome first win of the season.

The Blues will have to wait for their next game, which doesn’t take place until Saturday, November 12, against Tenby United.
