Walters’ treble helps veteran Vikings to victory

HAKIN United Over 40s registered their first win of 2022 with a 7-3 victory over Pencoed Athletic at the Observatory last Sunday (Jan 30).

It was the Vikings that opened the scoring when Matthew Price set up Ali Davies, who netted from close range after a collision with the visiting goalkeeper.

Shortly afterwards, a mix up in the Pencoed defence let in Leigh Walters for a simple tap in to make it 2-0.

Pencoed pulled a goal back before half time with a deflected free kick.

The Vikings made a great start to the second half as Matthew Price set up Paul Turner to score from close range and ten minutes later, Paul Jones crossed for Leigh Walters to hammer home number four.

Another deflected free kick gave Pencoed some hope, but that hope didn’t last long as Richard Perry turned his marker and drove the ball into the bottom corner to restore a three goal advantage.

Leigh Walters completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Matthew Price had been brought down.

Pencoed scored another free kick to make it 6-3 before Matthew Price rounded the keeper to complete the scoring in the last minute.

Hakin’s next game is at home to Church Village on Sunday, February 13.

Hakin 40s: Jason Morgan, Stuart MacDonald, Adam Collins, Kristan Bennett, Ali Davies, Paul Hannon, Marc Devonald, Joff Lennon, Richard Perry, Matthew Price, Paul Turner. Subs: Paul Jones, Leigh Walters, Gareth Morris, Mark Riley.
