CUSTOMERS who shop at Tesco in Cardigan have been busy voting in their thousands to help a variety of different causes as part of the supermarket’s £11.5m carrier bag charge fund.
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative, which sees grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000, which have been raised by the 5p bag charges, being awarded to a host of different environmental and greenspace projects.
Following the outcome of the hundreds of thousands of shoppers’ votes, Tesco have revealed that the project which came in first as part of Round One of the funding is T Llew Jones School in Llandysul, who will receive £12,000 to rebuild wildlife hides and a nature reserve garden for education.
Alwyn Ward, Headmaster of T Llew Jones School, said: “As a school, we are very excited about the ‘Hafan’ project. The support from Tesco and its customers has been outstanding and we can’t wait to start on the project.
“During the next few weeks we will begin the project, building a nature hide and installing cameras so that we can monitor the local wildlife from the school and through the internet following the launch of the school’s new website.
“We look forward to working with the school’s families, its community, local artists and gardeners. The wildlife habitats will be an excellent resource for us to learn about the world we live in.
“I must congratulate the school’s Eco Council, the school staff and friends of the school for submitting this excellent project for the Groundwork grant.”
Second place went to Pontgarreg Community Field, who will receive £10,000 towards their new play area and third place went to Aberporth Village Committee who are going to receive £8,000 to install safety barriers at the beach car park.
Bronwen Morgan-James, Pontgarreg Community Field Secretary, said: “Winning this money is going to help create a new play area for the children in the community.
“Since the school closed in 2012, the existing playground has become unsafe and needed replacing. Thanks to Tesco, we’re now able to achieve this.”
The second round of funding for the ‘Bags of Help’ scheme reopened on Monday April 18 and will remain open until Friday June 3.
Dave Thomas, Tesco Community Champion for Cardigan, said of the Bags of Help project: “It’s great that Tesco is putting money spent in Cardigan back into its community and proving ‘Every Little Helps’.
“With applications now open again until June, it gives Tesco customers and the local community their chance to put their own plans forward for funding.”
