A splitting time at Fairtrade event

Ammanford’s annual giant Fairtrade Banana Split attracted over 100 young people and their families to the town’s arcade last week.

The 100 feet long feast was sponsored by The Co-Op, who supplied hundreds of Fairtrade bananas to add to ice cream donated by local ice cream makers Franks. The ingredients were put in to foil covered guttering supplied by local builders merchants LBS by volunteers from Ammanford Evangelical Church and Gellimanwydd chapel.

Ammanford’s mayor, Alex Smith, was in attendance, suitably attired in a Fairtrade Banana Costume, rather than gold chain.

The Town Council’s Fairtrade representative, Julia Rees, was also on hand, helping with a Fairtrade information stall and selling Comic Relief merchandise from the Town Council’s new market stalls.

Children were also kept entertained by Circusdayze with a free circus skills workshop, funded by Ammanford Enterprise Partnership.

Next year’s event will be the tenth Fairtrade Banana Split, and the Ammanford Fair Trade Town Group are already looking forward to marking the tenth anniversary with something extra special.
