All chickens need is love

Screen Shot 2016-04-06 at 14.54.11IN THE RUN-UP to Easter, five of Llanelli Day Centre’s chickens were not laying eggs. Worried about the prospect of having no eggs for the holiday, one carer made an unusual suggestion.

One carer suggested the chickens needed a hug and, after a lot of cuddles, ten eggs suddenly appeared overnight.

The 23 special needs clients at the Maes Lliedi Opportunities Day Centre in Felinfoel have been rewarded for all their loving attention with clutches of eggs on a regular basis since the beginning of March.

Centre manager, Catherine Anthony, said: “The day after it was suggested love was all the chickens needed we had a cuddle session with Delilah, Daisy, Suzie, Cookie and Swansea Jack and the eggs suddenly appeared.

“I thought it was a member of staff having a laugh and placing the eggs but they have been coming in healthy clutches most days since.

“The client users are ‘eggstatic’. I have never seen so much laughter and fun. It just goes to show what the Beatles sang, ‘All You Need is Love’ is true. It really is proving to be a triumph for the home giving clients a fun focus and caring role in their daily routines.

“We have had the eggs tested and cleared and have been enjoying them added to the Day Centre recipes.”

Client user Susan Jones, who came up with the idea to invest some of their welfare fund in the chickens, said: “We all love feeding the chickens and giving them a cwtch.”

The chickens were donated by Wynnstay Farm Foods. Lewis Construction, who helped construct a pen and coop for the chickens in the home’s grounds last summer and donated £250 in chicken feed for the birds’ welfare.

Executive board member for health and social care, Councillor Jane Tremlett, said: “Our homes have to be commended for their inspirational interaction with clients coming up with so many innovative ideas we call magic moments to help fill their days with activities and fun.”
