MID AND WEST AM Simon Thomas, the Chair of the Finance Committee in the National Assembly, took the opportunity to visit the pharmacy at Tesco in Carmarthen to see for himself the increasing range of services being offered there.

Commenting on the visit Simon Thomas said: “While pharmacies in England are facing 11% funding cuts, I am pleased that here in Wales they are seen as an integral and important part of health service delivery.  Unlike across the border reductions are not being implemented here. Wales is doing things differently.

“The additional funding announced by Welsh Government to protect pharmacy services is welcomed across all parties.  As chair of the Finance Committee I will be scrutinising the Welsh Government to ensure spending gets to the front line of  the Welsh NHS and delivers better outcomes. Pharmacies can do a lot more and can take pressure off GPs and other parts of the health service.”

Speaking for Community Pharmacy Wales, Russell Goodway said: “Simon clearly appreciated that making good use of pharmacies is good for the financial health of the NHS as well as the health of the patient. We welcome his commitment to keep working with us on highlighting areas where public money can be spent to give the best return for the NHS and the public.”
