Argument led to drink-drive arrest

A DRIVER who left Burry Port following an argument with his partner was arrested for drink-driving as he returned.

Appearing at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (Sept 20) Michael Moriarty, 41, of Dol y Fan Road, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit.

The court heard that on September 3 police had cause to stop a VW Golf in Burry Port. After failing a roadside breath test, Moriarty was taken to the police station, where a sample showed 50mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg/100ml.

In an interview, Moriarty said that he had consumed two cans of beer.

A representative of the probation service said that Moriarty had argued with his partner and left their house. She then phoned him threatening to call the police because he had taken the vehicle if he didn’t return within an hour.

On his way back, Moriarty stopped at a shop to purchase the beer, and was stopped by police as he pulled into his street.

“He is aware of the seriousness of the offence, and that he could have hurt or killed someone,” she added.

“He understands that he should not have driven and should not have bought alcohol to drive.”

District Judge Christopher James noted that Moriarty had ‘an appalling record for driving offences, going back many years’.

Moriarty was banned from driving for 14 months, and sentenced to a community order featuring an eight week
electronic curfew between 8pm and 6am. In addition, he will pay costs totalling £170.
