Athlete facing attempted murder trial

581LAURA JESKA, a 41 year old former champion fell runner, has appeared in Birmingham Crown Court today (Aug 30) to face charges of trying to kill a former rugby player.

She appeared via a video link to face three charges about an incident in March at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham where three UK Athletics officials – Ralph Knibbs, Tim Begley and Kevan Taylor – were stabbed.

Jeska, of Machynlleth, Powys, was charged with the attempted murder of Mr Knibbs, and of wounding Mr Taylor and Mr Begley with intent. She was also charged with possession of three bladed articles.

No plea was entered and she spoke only to confirm her name. A two week trial is scheduled to start on September 22 in Birmingham. She will be remanded in custody until that date.

Mr Knibbs is famous for representing England at under-23 level and in total played 436 times for Bristol Rubgy Club, scoring 123 tries during his career throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The Sunday Times named him in the top ten centres of all time.
