Beach cleaning weekend at Pembrey

A BEACH CLEAN will be taking place at Pembrey Country Park this weekend, after recent spring tides and strong winds have left the sands strewn with debris.

Following the high winds, tons of driftwood, ghost netting, and non-biodegradable waste have been washed up at the beach.

The Entrance of Pembrey Beach was also full of rubbish, due to the area acting like a bottleneck and collecting floating items.

Grass from the dunes, some of which collapsed as a result of the conditions, also covered the sands, and our reporter was told that there were large quantities of plastics towards the MOD-controlled section.

In addition, The Herald understands that sand erosion has affected the nesting sites of Sand Martins near Black Point.

A number of walkers and members of the public had already begun the Herculean task of cleaning the beach, placing plastics and other non-biodegradable waste into onion sacks and net bags.

This weekend (Jan 20-21) two beach cleans are being organised by CCC Outdoor recreation staff, who are giving up their free time between 10:30am and 12:30pm.

Anyone interested in helping is urged to meet at the main access point to the beach at 10:30am on either day.

All equipment will be provided.
