Broadband key for rural infrastructure

Jonathan Edwards: Party of Wales candidate in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr

PLAID candidate in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr Jonathan Edwards has outlined his party’s policy to improve broadband connectivity across Wales and give rural businesses the access to the infrastructure that they need t o compete.

The Party of Wales candidate said that in Wales, five out of the twenty administrative authorities are ranked in the lowest category for broadband speed by Ofcom whilst only 22% of Carmarthenshire has access to superfast broadband.

He said that a lack of access to high speed internet was holding rural businesses back and is a deterrent for potential investors.

Plaid Cymru has plans to deliver superfast broadband to 100% of Wales.

The Party of Wales candidate in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr Jonathan Edwards said:

“If we are to help rural businesses compete then it is crucial that we give them access to fast speed internet and mobile signal. Currently this isn’t the case. In fact, according to the latest data from Ofcom almost 80% of Carmarthenshire doesn’t have access to superfast broadband at all.

“Plaid Cymru wants to see an improved broadband connection, getting everybody online so that rural businesses can compete. It is our target to ensure that all parts of Wales have access to speeds of at least 30Mbps and ensure that mobile phone operators provide a better service in all par ts of Wales.

“Poor broadband provision puts rural businesses at a disadvantage, and may actually stop businesses investing in rural Wales. There are too many businesses, like the one I’m visiting today, that has invested its own money in superfast broadband.

“Plaid Cymru will be the champion of rural Wales, and delivering strong rural infrastructure is a fundamental part of that.”
